In 2003 the group of Primary, Secondary and Special School Headteachers who met regularly, decided they wanted to strengthen this good partnership in order to further support the education of children across Bexhill. This was the beginning of the Bexhill Consortium. The structure for the Consortium was developed with a Board and Executive and the schools charged a levy on themselves according to the size of the school. This money was put in a 'communal pot' for the benefit of all the children. The organisation developed and sponsored music, dyslexia support and the 'gifted and talented' to name but a few areas.
All the headteachers of the Bexhill State Primary and Secondary schools and the Principal of Bexhill College are Board members of the Consortium. The Consortium is dedicated to raising standards and to improving the chances for all children in Bexhill.
In 2005 the idea of Extended Schools (Services) was launched by the Government in line with the 'Every Child Matters' agenda. Throughout the country, schools were grouped together to develop the Extended Services agenda. Bexhill Schools with the Consortium, were very well placed to meet that agenda. The Board was enlarged to include representatives from the PCT (Primary Care Trust), the Voluntary Sector, the Local Council, Social Services, the Children's Centres and others.
At the end of 2006 the Consortium became early adopters of the Extended Services Agenda. Regular meetings included all the Bexhill contributors with the opportunity for audit, review and development. Parent rooms have been developed in some Primary schools and Link workers support and develop the work of Family Learning and Parental Support.
This is a brief synopsis of the Development of the Consortium but we trust it gives you a flavour of how we are trying to enrich children's lives.
